Sometimes I look at other people’s lives and, from the outside, it just seems smoother than mine.
Less drama.
Fewer visible mistakes.
No big public falls.
Just steady.
If you’ve been following me for a while, you know my story hasn’t been smooth or simple.
Music education.
Theme parks.
Seminary.
Ministry.
Alcoholism, relapses, and consequences.
Corporate work.
Recovery.
Retirement.
Peer support.
Writing.
It has not been a straight line.
And if I’m not careful, comparison tells me a story.
“Your life is a failure.
You had your shot,
and you messed it up.”
That voice still shows up sometimes.
Even working on this week’s reflection, I could feel some of that comparison rising to the surface.
My mind slips into would-have, could-have, should-have, and the unease, judgment, and sense of failure begin to stir.
I start replaying decisions.
Rewriting scenes.
Measuring my path against someone else’s highlight reel.
But here is what I know today.
I am comparing my insides to someone else’s outsides.
What looks smooth from a distance does not mean it was simple.
What looks messy does not mean it was wasted.
Every twist.
Every fall.
Every detour.
They did not erase my life.
They formed it.
Would I change parts of my past? Of course.
But peace does not come from rewriting it.
It comes from accepting that this winding, imperfect path shaped me into who I am today.
And today, I am healthier.
More present.
More grounded than I have ever been.
Some lives look smoother.
Mine looks real.
And that is enough.
The circle is not closed.
And neither is your story.
